Beginner's Guide to HDTV


"What exactly HDTVis, and what does it mean for me?"

HDTV. You know you want one. Do it all. We heard that HTDV offers greater clarity that we are accustomed to seeing, smoother motion, richer colors, surround sound and the potential to improve performance by various pieces of equipment that we work together. But before you buy, it is helpful to understand the technology and its related issues.

First, but only to buy an HDTV and plug into a standard cable box gives you high-definition television. To watch high definition TV, you need three components: a source of HDTV channel HDTV and HDTV shows. Your source, the HDTV set, capable of displaying both the regular and HDTV, but the TV displayed on a standard analog HDTV sets can be disappointing. Widescreen HDTV broadcasts pictures with higher detail and quality than analog TV, or other types of digital television (DTV). Superiority of HDTV stems from three factors: aspect ratio, resolution and frame rate.

A standard analog TV has an aspect ratio of 4: 3 (i.e. four units wide and 4 units high), giving it the form of "almost square" which is also common in computer monitors. However, with an aspect ratio of 16: 9 (16 units wide 9 and higher), HDTV provides a closer look at "cinema" for TV shows or films shot in widescreen. Complications arise because not all television is shot in widescreen. With standard or high definition 4: 3 programming, HDTV may display vertical black bars on both sides of the screen, it might stretch or enlarge the image.

Problems created by proportions have workarounds, but this requires that the TV or video source (i.e., satellite tuner, cable box or DVD player) has an aspect ratio control. To avoid disappointment, make sure that the television that you intend to buy offers this feature.

As regards the resolution or an image detail, HDTV offers more than twice the sharpness of the analog TV. Analog is the equivalent of a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, which means 480 lines of detail visible. At its highest level, HDTV has a resolution almost six times better than-1, 920 x 1, 080 pixels or 1080 lines of detail visible.

HDTV is available in two different resolutions: 1, 080i and 720 p. The former has more lines and pixels, but the latter has a progressive-scan format that provides an image easier during movement. One is not necessarily better than the other only different. Format a third, 1 080 p, combines the best features of the two, but the content of programming is rare.

Frame rate refers to the number of times a set creates a complete picture on the screen every second. "As already mentioned, the frame rate ending in the" frame rate are interlaced and ending with "p" are generally progressive. With the progressive frame rate or progressive scans, the lines of each frame are drawn in sequence across the screen from left to right. In an interlaced frame rate or scanning, is drawn only every second line, and then the process is repeated to fill the gaps.

DTV frame rates vary from 24 frames per second to 60 frames per second. Therefore, a "1, 080i HDTV" has a resolution of 1, 920 x 1, 080 pixels and can display 60 interlaced frames per second.

Looking to the future

It is safe to predict that an HDTV become obsolete now bought so soon. It is also a prediction that, as time passes, they will go down even more in the price and that more and more content will be provided in HD format.

Some analysts expect to see increased content available in broadcasting in the air, the FCC mandated around DTV tuners. And it's definitely my prediction that HDTV will many of us tearing our hair out when we configure and make fine-tuning!

These include contrast ratio that lets you know how deep black levels are compared with the brightness levels of whites, as well as the number of frames per second can process the HDTV. The latter is usually expressed in Hz and is important as well an HDTV will perform when the action is.

30, 40 or 50 inches?

Spectator square TV HDTV buying guide-a guide you can understand


If you Google "hdtv buying guide" you'll get about 1,070 million results. So why write another HDTV buying guide? Because none of the 70 million thousand guides already written is understandable. Not a and not a bit. OK, I admit that I haven't read all the results of 1,070 million, but I read the first 20 or 30 or so, and that all say the same thing. They say that stuff overwhelms your mind: which is better Plasma or LCD or 1080p or 1080i or 720/60 Hz or 120 Hz, and so forth, and so on, until your head is spinning. The reason that the guides are so complicated is that people writing guides are techie geek. I don't mean any offense, but knows too much for their own good, and I don't know what is good for you. I don't know what is good for you, but I can tell you what you need to know and what you don't need to know, and I will give you a headache or make you feel like an idiot.

If you're reading this, it's probably because you're still watching TV. TV square is the term that I came up with fifteen years ago, when I started to produce programmes in HDTV. I call it the older NTSC TV system "square" because compared to widescreen HDTV, the image appears. The large screen is the second best thing that you're going to like on your new HD set. The first thing you're going to come about is clarity. The picture of HDTV is so clear that when broadcast stations of DTV/HDTV passed last year, the news anchors began even more to worry about their makeup. The picture is so clear that reveals every stain and scrub! What does all this do about buying a new HDTV? Well, the truth is, HDTV is much better than square TV that virtually any new HDTV set you buy is going to please. Yes, any HDTV you purchase is going to be OK. If you wish, you can stop reading now and go out and buy one that you can afford. I mean it-stop reading now and HDTV you can afford to buy. Oh, want a little more guidance? OK, I'll give it to you in 3 simple steps in order of importance. (But remember, you do not need to complete all steps. Stop whenever you've had enough and go buy your new HDTV. )

Step 1. Budget: The only important consideration

This is obvious, but sometimes the obvious needs to be said, especially when it is the only really important. What can you afford? In case you're thinking you're going to have to sell the farm to buy a new HDTV set, quit worrying. HDTV sets are cheaper now than it was when fashion color TV went from black and white to color. Actually, you can buy a nice new HD set for under $ 500, also starting at $ 200. So, dig in your pocket, see how much change you and head to the store.

1/2 step 1: choose a Major

Easy. Just make sure you buy a brand that is recognized. Here are the brands that you should consider: Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Vizio, Sony, Mitsubishi, Toshiba. Just don't buy one from the back of someone's truck.

Step 2: screen size

The screen size is going to be mainly determined from step 1, your budget. How much you can afford, the larger screen you will get. Of course, in the case of HDTV, the bigger the better (to a limit, of course). The most popular size/price are screens that are between 40 and 42 inches. The best way to approach this step is to find out what is the biggest screen you can get for your money, then head to the store and buy an HDTV.

Step 3: resolution

Here is where it gets a bit technical, but don't worry. If you want to keep reading, there are only two numbers you should be familiar with: 1080 and 720. Don't worry about the letters after the numbers (1080i, 1080p), it doesn't matter. Just remember that the larger the number, the better the resolution. 1080 is better than 720. But keep in mind that any one you choose for the price you can afford it will be much better than TV square which will be very pleased. This is all about. Head to the store and buy an HDTV.

Yes I know. Is the other HDTV buying guides that tell you that you have to decide between an LCD or Plasma and many-hertz refresh rate and a lot of other technical stuff, but it does not matter. If you get an LCD or Plasma or 60 Hz or 120 Hz or 240 Hz, or even if you get a 1080i or 1080p or 720 p, the image is going to look so good that it doesn't matter to you. It would be as kind of choosing between a new Mercedes or BMW when you've been driving a Chevy 1990. Either one is going to thrill you.

Buy your first HDTV-a step-by-step guide


Shopping for a TV in these days of safe is not what it used to be. In the old days, all I had to do was find out how big your TV was near next door, then go to Sears and buy a few inches bigger. Now, with HDTV explode in any direction, you need a deeper understanding of the available options before deciding what to get. Does not need to be intimidating, but if you break down the decision-making process in just a few steps.

First of all, let's assume that you want the latest and greatest TV type and that it would be a HDTV (High Definition Television). The main factors to consider in choosing an HDTV are:

Budget range
Screen size
Display technology (Plasma, LCD or DLP)
Resolution and image quality
Known issues
Budget range


HDTV prices are linked to each factor in the list above, but the screen size and viewing technology tend to have stronger influence. Here's a rough idea of what to expect in different price ranges (in dollars):

Under $ 500: 24 inches & smaller LCD HDTVs, HD-ready (no tuner). Some brands of Economics such as Vice, ViewSonic and Olevia, could offer as large as 32 inch fashion for under $ 500 during a special offer.

$ 500 to $ 1000: 42 inches and smaller LCD HDTV from trademarks and economy through brands like Toshiba, JVC and Sharp. 42-inch and smaller 720 p Samsung LCDs. 37 and 40-inch Plasmas, provided that they are last year's model. Toshiba, Sharp, LG and economy brands offer a 1080p HDTV in this price range.

$ 1000 to $ 1500: 46 inches and smaller LCD, including some models of Sharp Aquos 1080p HDTV and Samsung, whether they are for sale. 42-inch and smaller plasma screens. 57 inches and the smallest DLP HDTVs.

$ 1500 to $ 2500: 52 inches and smaller LCD, including Sony Bravias, and most of the old generation

Screen size


Choosing the right size HDTV is more important than it might seem. Too small, and you won't get the immersive experience of TV trucks; too big, and you will feel disappointed with imperfections that you can see in the picture.

View the area where you can watch TV and estimated that the average distance a viewer will be sitting on the screen. For the best experience of your viewing distance should be 2 to 4 times the diagonal measurement of the screen. For example, a set of 50 inches is best viewed by 100 or 200 inches or 8 to 16 feet away.

Display technology


The most common types of flatscreen HDTV are plasma, LCD and DLP. They are all quite subtle, and at reasonable prices. Projection & CRT HDTVs are out there, but the size and cost puts them out of the radar of most people.

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display and is the same kind of screen used in most new computer monitors (you're probably looking at an LCD screen now), mobile phones and many other devices. LCDs more efficient when you want an average small set, or set a lightweight, or watching TV in a well-lit room.

Plasma sets have a glass screen (as opposed to plastic LCD display) with an ionized gas inserted behind it that creates an image when it is energized by electrical charges. Plasmas have an obvious advantage over LCD image quality, especially when viewed from an angle, but may have more screen glare in bright light.

The acronym DLP Digital Light Processing. These collections using small oscillating mirrors behind the screen to create an image. Fashion is technically DLP rear-projection televisions, but usually is rather flat. They are cheaper than LCD and Plasma, but are often a bit too heavy and often hang on a wall.

Image quality and resolution


If you compare two HDTVs that are the same size and type of display, but they have vastly different price tags, the reason is probably the image quality and resolution. Lower-end sets tend to have a poor contrast ratio (the difference between the image brightness and brighter, they may show), poor levels of nero (black scenes are totally Black?) and incorrect colors. Other problems with cheap fashion may include motion blur, Ghost images (just what it sounds like weak echoes of images) and band (horizontal or vertical lines that appear on the screen for no reason).

The resolution is the number of small points that TV uses to make an image and has a direct effect on sharpness. These two levels, 720 p and 1080p. is the highest1080p resolution and is really only needed if your HDTV is larger than approximately 45 inches, or if you intend to use it as a computer monitor.

Known issues


Make an HDTV with a picture perfect is an incredibly difficult thing to do. There are dozens of problems that may arise, as the already mentioned banding and ghosting, and it takes really a cream cutout reliably to avoid all of them. Creators of lower-end HDTV do some set of high quality, of course, but in new models, there is usually an issue or two that has not been completely resolved. This is the downside of being early adopters. Fortunately, these problems are exposed on the internet immediately, so potential buyers may wait until they were addressed. The best way to learn about these problems is to check the relevant online reviews HDTV written by current owners of HDTVS and see if there is a generally positive or negative attitude on the set you are interested in.
